For an authentic letterpress look, nothing beats real handset type. Using our extensive collection of vintage wood and metal type, we offer design, layout, typesetting, and press makeready services for a variety of projects, including cards and invitations, small posters, and broadsides - sorry, no weddings!
We print limited runs of a limited number of small projects on our vintage presses: two classic Kelsey 3x5 tabletop platten presses and a primitive Challenge flatbed cylinder proofing press. We're building production capacity as we restore our venerable Challenge Gordon 8x12...and we're in the market for a Vandercook.
American Primitive Letterpress proprietor Robert Earl Hardy hosts the American Primitive Letterpress Workshop Series at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts in Annapolis, with Introduction to Letterpress sessions offered on Saturdays throughout the year. The workshops involve small groups of students (16 and older) in the hands-on process of designing, typesetting, and printing their own cards, flyers, and small posters using American Primitive’s vintage type and presses. For details and to register, please visit Maryland Hall.
