Traditional Typesetting & Letterpress Printing

Since spring 2015, American Primitive Letterpress has been based at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts in Annapolis - one of the state's leading arts education, exhibition, and performance institutions - where we offer monthly Introduction to Letterpress workshops on Saturdays from noon until 4pm throughout the year.

AMERICAN PRIMITIVE LETTERPRESS

saturday workshops at Maryland Hall

Founded in 2010 in the basement of our 1887 Maryland farmhouse, American Primitive Letterpress designs and prints specialty posters and flyers, cards and invitations, chapbooks and broadsides, and myriad ephemera by traditional letterpress methods. We hand-set vintage wooden and metal type and ornaments and print limited-run jobs on our antique Challenge cylinder proof press and on our slightly less ancient but no less miraculous Kelsey tabletop platen presses. Meanwhile, we’re gradually restoring our massive, venerable 1884 Challenge Gordon 8x12 to production capabilities. We work in an “American Primitive” vein: simple, straightforward designs suggested by the materials at hand and executed by means of the most basic technology.
